In response to the growing popularity of Over-The-Top (OTT) apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Imo, state-owned Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) is set to overhaul its dialer application, Alaap, in 2025. With a vision to attract a broader user base both domestically and internationally, BTCL is preparing to introduce a suite of new features alongside competitive pricing strategies.
To make Alaap more appealing and versatile, BTCL plans to incorporate services like SMS, hosted IP telephony, voice broadcasting, bulk SMS, cloud storage, wallet services, bill payment options, and even metro rail ticket purchasing. In addition, the telecom operator will establish a dedicated customer care center exclusively for Alaap users to ensure seamless support.
Speaking to BSS, BTCL Managing Director Md Anwar Hossain shared the company’s ambitious plans for the app.
“Our goal is to amplify Alaap’s presence in every sphere of society. We aim to enhance marketing activities and integrate cutting-edge features to cater to our users’ needs,” he stated.
Affordable Communication with New Features
Hossain revealed that BTCL is working to introduce affordable call rates and SMS packages, making the app more cost-effective for its users. The company expects to roll out these new features by April 2025, ensuring Alaap remains competitive in the OTT app market.
Launched in March 2021, Alaap allows users to make calls to any mobile or landline number using a unique subscriber number. Unlike global apps, Alaap aims to reduce dependency on foreign platforms while safeguarding the personal data of Bangladeshi users. Currently, Alaap-to-Alaap calls and chats are free over the internet, but off-net calls to other mobile or landline numbers cost Tk 0.35 per minute, plus internet charges.
Challenges with Number Allocation
Despite its growing popularity, Alaap faces challenges in number allocation. According to BTCL officials, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has allocated 20 lakh unique numbers in two phases, but the current pool is nearly exhausted.
As of now, Alaap boasts over 19 lakh subscribers, with 16.49 lakh users verified through NID, and another 3.94 lakh users awaiting verification. However, due to a shortage of numbers, BTCL is unable to accommodate new users despite high demand.
Growing User Base and Revenue
Currently, Alaap has nearly 17 lakh active users, generating over 7 lakh paid calls daily. Free calls on the platform average between 8,000 and 10,000 per day. Since its inception, Alaap has earned Tk 32 crore in revenue, demonstrating its potential to become a major player in the OTT market.
Alaap vs. Global OTT Apps
Alaap, which can be downloaded from Google Play, offers a user experience similar to popular apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. The registration process requires a valid mobile number and an NID card, after which users are provided with a unique BTCL virtual phone number. This initiative ensures that the app meets local needs while maintaining security and compliance.
Alaap’s Vision for 2025
BTCL’s efforts to enhance Alaap reflect a broader commitment to digital innovation and customer-centric services. By integrating modern features and addressing user concerns like number shortages, Alaap is poised to become a robust alternative to global OTT apps, ensuring affordable and secure communication for all.
As BTCL continues its journey, the revamped Alaap app in 2025 may redefine the way Bangladesh communicates, creating a stronger digital footprint for the nation.
