Karimganj Upazila, October 27, 2024 — In a powerful speech advocating for a shift towards democratic resilience, Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman, Islami Andolon Bangladesh’s Central Joint Secretary General, urged the adoption of the Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system. His remarks, made at a significant public gathering organized by Islami Andolon Bangladesh, spotlighted PR as a pathway to sustainable state-building and fairer representation.
Presided over by Upazila Branch President Rafiqul Islam and conducted by General Secretary Habibullah Habib, the event attracted a wide array of participants, from local leaders to committed activists, all gathered in solidarity for democratic change.
The PR Method: Key to Democratic Revival
In his keynote address, Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman stated, “Since independence, we have witnessed the erosion of democratic rights under successive authoritarian regimes. The people have had enough of autocratic rule; they seek true representation. Pir Saheb Charmonai’s proposal for the PR method represents a sustainable solution to uphold democratic freedom. This approach is imperative for authentic state-building and there is no alternative.”
An Urgent Call for Unity
Rahman urged the attendees to stand together to protect the nation from any anti-national agenda. “Unity is our greatest strength against conspiratorial forces,” he said, emphasizing the need to consolidate support behind Islami Andolon Bangladesh and its mission to empower Pir Saheb Charmonai in advancing democratic ideals.
