In a bid to alleviate the ongoing tensions, the government has announced a further relaxation of the curfew in Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Gazipur for the next four days, as stated by Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on July 30. The revised curfew hours will be from 7 am to 8 pm, effective from Wednesday, July 31, to Saturday, August 3.
This decision comes after a prior relaxation on July 28, which saw the curfew eased for an 11-hour window from 7 am to 6 pm for three days in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, and Narsingdi. The nationwide curfew, imposed on July 20 due to widespread violence linked to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has been incrementally relaxed to restore normalcy.
The announcement followed a crucial meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs, chaired by Home Minister Kamal. The meeting, which commenced at 3:20 pm, included Law Minister Anisul Huq, Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, and Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, along with several state ministers: Mohammad Ali Arafat (Information and Broadcasting), Bir Muktijoddha Md Nazrul Islam Chowdhury (Labour and Employment), and Zunaid Ahmed Palak (Posts, Telecommunications & Information Technology).
Senior officials, including secretaries, the inspector general of police, the RAB chief, and other law enforcement leaders, were also in attendance. The agenda focused on the current curfew and security measures, the reopening of educational institutions, and discussions about banning Jamaat-Shibir.
Home Minister Kamal emphasized the government’s commitment to balancing security with the gradual return to normal life. “Our priority is to ensure the safety of citizens while responding to their need for normalcy,” he stated.
As the curfew is gradually eased, residents in the affected districts hope for a swift return to stability.
