Tanzir Ahmmed: Thank you very much. As a deck cadet in the merchant marine, the primary responsibility is ensuring safe navigation of the vessel. This includes cargo loading and unloading, navigation, safety protocol adherence, and supervision of deck activities.
Interviewer: It sounds like a challenging yet rewarding profession. What inspired you to pursue a career in the merchant marine as a deck cadet?
Tanzir Ahmmed: I was born near the haor in Kishoreganj district. Growing up near the shore, I was always fascinated by the expansiveness of the sea and water. Traveling the world and working in a formal and challenging environment quickly captivated me.
Interviewer: Excellent. Could you describe your journey towards becoming a merchant marine officer as a deck cadet?
Tanzir Ahmmed: After passing the HSC examination in 2020, I joined the Bangladesh Marine Academy, Rangpur in 2021. From 2021 to 2023, I underwent rigorous training in maritime education and concurrently pursued the path to become a merchant marine officer in the deck department.
Interviewer: As a deck cadet, how does a typical day look like for you?
Tanzir Ahmmed: A typical day starts promptly with conducting routine inspections of the vessel, ensuring everything is in order and safely operational. Throughout the day, we assist senior officers in various tasks such as navigation, cargo operations, and equipment maintenance. It’s a hands-on experience that keeps us busy and engaged.
Interviewer: It seems like there’s a lot of responsibility involved. What challenges have you faced as a deck cadet?
Tanzir Ahmmed: The biggest challenge is being away from family and friends for extended periods at sea, especially during special occasions. Additionally, we must always remain vigilant due to the unpredictable nature of the sea and weather conditions, being prepared for any situation.
Interviewer: How do you cope with these challenges while maintaining professional responsibility?
Tanzir Ahmmed: It’s all about staying focused and maintaining a positive mindset. Building strong relationships with colleagues and creating a supportive environment onboard helps. Also, utilizing technology to stay connected with loved ones enhances our sense of home comfort.
